What is periodontics?

Periodontics is a dental specialty dedicated to treating and preventing gum disease. Because inflammatory gum conditions can weaken your gums and lead to loose teeth — you even risk losing your teeth in severe cases — periodontal treatments are essential at the very first sign of gum disease.

Periodontics also involves making sure your gums are healthy enough to support a dental implant and performing any necessary grafting procedures to ensure you have implant success.

When should I see a periodontist?

It’s essential to come into the office of Robert A Rees, DDS, if you have a history of gum disease or if you’re starting to experience gum issues, such as:

  • Bleeding
  • Tenderness
  • Swelling
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Gum recession

You should also come in to see Dr. Rees if it feels like your teeth are loose or if it seems like they’re shifting out of place. Dr. Rees performs a comprehensive diagnostic evaluation and can even gather dental X-rays to determine the severity of your gum condition. He talks with you about your diagnosis and counsels you about all possible treatment options.

Which periodontal treatment do I need?

For minor to moderate gum disease issues and gingivitis, Dr. Rees may recommend a scaling and root planing procedure to remove stubborn tartar from deep below your gumline. If you have more advanced gum disease (periodontitis), gums that pull away from your teeth, or tissue loss, Dr. Rees may recommend:

  • Bone or soft tissue grafting
  • Canine exposure
  • Crown lengthening
  • Occlusal adjustment
  • Periodontal splinting
  • Osseous surgery

Dr. Rees can also take tissue biopsies if you have abnormal tissue lesions that warrant further attention. He can follow through with any additional oral surgical procedures you may need in this case.

Once Dr. Rees treats your current condition, he educates you about preventing gum disease. He equips you with the skills and knowledge you need to care for your teeth and gums at home, and books you for twice-a-year preventive dental exams and cleanings.
